The Gupta Program was devised over 10 years ago by Ashok Gupta as a treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/M.E.) when he suffered from the condition while at University. He later found that it can be effective in treating Fibromyalgia, burnout and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and other chronic conditions where stress is a factor.
The theory behind the Gupta Program is based on the neuroscience research of Joseph LeDoux at New York University, and others. This research found that during periods of high stress, especially if that stress is prolonged then a part of the brain which has much control over the nervous system – the amygdala – becomes set on “high alert”. This can also happen after an acute body trauma such as an accident, illness or surgery. The amygdala’s job is to detect threats to the body and protect it by switching on the fight/fight/freeze system. With the amygdala on high alert, this system can be triggered many times a day by previously normal activities, anxieties about doing tasks and by any bodily sensation that was present at the time of the initial conditioning, such as painful muscles or sore throat. Any new emotional or physical stress will also activate the already hypersensitive amygdala. The result is exhaustion, muscle pain, ‘brain fog’ and many other body symptoms, which are characteristic of these conditions.

I discovered the Gupta Programme in 2009 when I had had CFS and fibromyalgia for 3 years and it had become so bad that I was in bed for much of each day. I used program at home with my full commitment for 6 months and was fully functioning again after that time. I then used the programme when I felt the need over the next six months to integrate back into normal life and start to study and work again. I have been fully well since then and now lead a great life combining my coaching and mindfulness teaching along side other work at a local university. It is from my own experience I recommend the Gupta Program as with committed practice it can be a very effective treatment for anyone with CFS/M.E., fibromyalgia, burnout and MCS.
I am an independent therapist and am not paid in any way by the Gupta Program.
